Meet Socorro

My name is Socorro Carranza, and I am a registered dietitian from the Los Angeles area. I have been practicing clinical nutrition for over 13 years. I am a certified diabetes educator, and I have an advanced certificate in weight management. My journey in nutrition started many years ago shortly after I started college. My grandmother, whom I love dearly, was diagnosed with diabetes. The doctor recommended she follow a healthy diet to control her blood sugar. She was so overwhelmed because she did not know what foods would affect her diabetes and did not know what was meant by “portion” in the brochures that were given to her. This is when my mission began. I was determined to find out everything I needed to know about diet and diabetes so that I could help her. I started my studies in nutrition and fell in love with the field. I started to realize that nutrition affected everyone, whether it was good or bad nutrition. What we consume could make all the difference between good and bad health, a good quality of life or a bad one, and a good self-esteem or low self-esteem.

My mission led me to graduating with a degree in Clinical Nutrition from UC Davis and a Master’s degree in Public Health Nutrition. I learned the stark reality that obesity was becoming an epidemic and people were getting sicker. This became more apparent as I started practicing as a dietitian. However, there was one big problem: even though more people were being affected, many did not have access to a nutrition professional. Dozens of patients would express their frustration about their limited visits with me, which were dictated by their insurance carriers. Their one or two visits were not enough to learn what they needed to in order to make permanent changes. I agreed with them. All research pointed to long-term, regular follow-ups with a nutrition professional in order to obtain lasting weight loss results. The studies have shown that in order to lose weight and keep it off, you need at least a few months of regular contact with a nutrition professional and good accountability, something that most insurance companies are not approving. If a client wanted further visits, they had to pay out of pocket for a dietitian and be charged $200-400 per hour. This, for most, was out of reach. So what were they to do? This is how Peak Nutrition Academy was born. I envisioned a long-term program in which the person would have group and/or individual accountability, a program in which individuals would learn how to eat healthy in a step-by-step manner and would never be shackled to another diet again, a program accessible to everyone.

In all the programs developed, I have used research-based, proven guidelines to develop a method that works and is getting astounding results. Most of the participants in the Apex program are losing 10-25 lbs. in 8 weeks and the private clients are losing 15-30 pounds and continue to lose weight afterwards. Clients that were once pre-diabetic are no longer pre-diabetic, uncontrolled diabetics are becoming controlled, and individuals with high triglycerides or cholesterol are getting normal results once finished.
